RESIDENTIAL BUILDING SECURITY SURVEY CHECKLIST

The purpose of a security survey is to identify security vulnerabilities which may make a building an easy target for criminals. Survey your own property with the help of this checklist below. Each question with an answer of “no” indicates you my have a security weakness which requires attention.

LIGHTING

Is there a minimum illumination level of three foot-candles at the building’s entrances? YES / NO/ N/A

Is there adequate lighting around the perimeter of the building to enable residents to detect the presence of persons at 75 feet?  YES / NO / N/A

Are the building’s lighting fixtures protected against damage?  YES / NO / N/A

MAILBOXES

Is the mailbox area open to public/street view? YES / NO / N/A

Are first names or initials removed from mailboxes? YES / NO / N/A

ELEVATORS

Are there mirrors in the elevators? YES / NO / N/A

Is there a working alarm button in the elevator? YES / NO / N/A

LAUNDRY ROOMS

Is the laundry room door secured with a high security lock or electronic access control system? n YES n NO n N/A

Does the laundry room have a window for visibility? YES / NO / N/A

Do key switches control the lighting in the laundry room? YES / NO / N/A

ELECTRONIC SECURITY SYSTEMS

Are roof doors locally alarmed or monitored by building staff? YES / NO / N/A Does the building have CCTV? YES / NO / N/A

BUILDING PERSONNEL

Does building management conduct background checks on building staff? YES / NO / N/A

Does building management conduct background checks on outside contractors? YES / NO / N/A

LANDSCAPING

Does the building’s landscaping provide concealment for individuals? YES / NO / N/A

Are tree branches within 10 feet of the building trimmed to prevent them from being utilized for second-floor access? YES / NO / N/A
